May 1922. Alfred examined by the courses of chefs in a London hotel the Ritz. Carson offers molesley place of a footman, but while Mosely ponders Alfred returns: he failed the exam. Lady Grantham's new lady's maid miss Baxter. Thomas persuades Baxter to spy on the family and servants and report back to him. One of the farmers on the estate ruined, Mary and Tom want to farm the land, but the owner appeals directly to the Earl and asks him for deferment of debt. The count lends him money. Lady Grantham persuades a reluctant Mrs Patmore to put in the kitchen refrigerator. Edith goes to the doctor in London, suspecting that she is pregnant. Tom is thinking about moving to America. Bates overhears the conversation of Anna and Mrs Hughes. He has to threaten Mrs Hughes his resignation, she tells him that Anna was raped, but says that it is not green, and the stranger that was in the house. Bates tells Anna that he loves her more than ever, they are reconciled. Bates continues to suspect green, and tells Mrs Hughes that will find the culprit. Lady violet hires a new gardener at the request of Isabel, but soon dismisses his suspicion of the theft of small items from her office.
